An email verification tool is indispensable for your WordPress website.
As a marketer, an email verification tool will allow you to verify new leads before they make it to their email list.
An email verification tool will make sure that you collect emails and grow your email lists that can reflect positively on your campaigns, content, and strategies.
Verifying new leads means filtering out invalid and inactive email addresses who aren’t great candidates to become leads.
Email verification makes room for legitimate users only.
Let’s dig deeper into it.
what is email validation?
Email validation is the process by which an email address is confirmed to exist.
When you use an email validation tool, it compares the provided email address with its service provider (i.e., Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail) and determines whether the email record is valid or not.
How to verify email addresses in WordPress?
Step 1: Create the email verification form
Create a form to request the user’s email address.
You will receive a confirmation in your inbox.
Step 2: Use a View to hide form B (unless the email is verified)
Form B is only visible to users with verified email addresses via Form A. To verify email addresses, place the shortcode for form B inside a View. Use filtering to hide it from non-verified users.
- Set the View to show a “Single Entry” from Form A.
- Use only the shortcode for Form B in the Content box.
- Add two filters so the View Content (Form B) will only be visible if both the Entry Key and Email Address match an entry in Form A.
- Add default=1 to the filters so if the URL is tampered with, that filter will not be ignored.
If the page is loaded directly without clicking on the link in the email, these filters will return “No Entries” and hide the form.
This system’s security increases by combining the random (and not publicly visible) entry key with the email address.
Modify the default “No Entries” message to include the shortcode for Form A or a link to it.
This tells visitors who may arrive at the page directly, that they must confirm their email address before proceeding.
Step 3: Add a verification link in the email message
When an email address is submitted in Form A, the verification email is triggered.
Your email copy has to have a link to the View created in step 2.
Pass both the entry key and email address to match the filters included in the View.
You can use any form values you’d like as long as you add matching filters in the View.
When the link in the verification email is clicked, the View matches the data in the URL to an entry in Form A. When it finds a match, the form is visible!
How Email Validation WordPress plugins can Help You Keep Your List Clean?
You can use the Check Email plugin to test if your WordPress install can send emails.
It’s a free plugin and super fast to use.
Simply install the plugin and then go to your wp-admin > Tools > Check Email.
Enter in an email you have access to in the “Send a test email” settings and then click on “Send test email”.
Remember that the Check Email plugin checks if your WordPress install can send an email.
It does not check the deliverability of your emails.
Instead, you should send your test email to a mail-tester.com email address.
Because an email service provider (ESPs) like Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail can block emails instead of filtering them into the spam folder.
While mail-tester always receives emails without blocking them.
